SHARON LIDBURY
Sharon lives in South Croydon, Surrey. Having read a book in her late teens, that featured a Lacemaker, she was intrigued. By chance she found a class for Bobbin Lacemaking with Adult Education in 1981 and so the journey and the passion began.
Following fairly typical program of discovery of the English laces, she went on to experience Milanese lace with Pat Read with whom she designed several pieces.
City and Guilds opened-up a broader experience and resulted in the opportunity to study design methods with the Czech lacemakers since 2007.
Along with Alison Tolson and Janet Evans she now, runs a design course preparing design work which culminates in a week of lacemaking in the Czech Republic with Alina Jaskova and Anna Halikova. Here the preparation design work is realised as working designs for final lacemaking pieces.
Sharon qualified and taught for Adult Education for many years. She currently has private weekly classes and regular workshops where she enjoys sharing this craft with others, adapting and encouraging students to make lace that is relevant for today’s busy lifestyles.
Retiring from regular employment at the end of 2025, Sharon’s aim is to reach more people to introduce them to this fascinating and historical world.
Sharon joined the Westhope group in 2015, and has exhibited with ‘Let the River Flow By’, ‘Elemental’ and ‘Freeform’.
